"We didn't realize we were making memories, we just knew we were having fun."
I don't know who said that, but it's a great quote. I try to keep this in my mind while we are in our homeschooling season. My kids often say, "This is the best day ever!!!" And they mean it. It warms my heart so much that they are enjoying their childhood and declare most days of the week that it's the best day ever. I cannot relate to that as my childhood was the complete opposite.
Most days during the week, my kids and I have an afternoon tea time. I didn't set out to have a designated tea time. We're not from Europe or anything. I just love tea. My kids always wanted to drink tea when I had it. Then it kind of took on a life of its own.
Some of our deepest conversations come from around the table at tea time. We've talked about so many subjects. Politics, our faith, family, friends, dreams, wishes...we've prayed together, read adventure stories... It's our time to connect without it feeling forced.
My son doesn't always join in. He's 5, but when he does, he enjoys it, too. He loves tea and just hanging out in our presence, even if he doesn't always understand the topic. Often we will put on our children's devotional app for a quick lesson to talk about. We use Keys for Kids. It's free online, and there's an app as well.
One of the most important things we ever do for our children is to listen to them. I mean really listen to what they're saying. Children have a natural ability to open up their hearts and just spill out all of their feelings. If we allow them to.
Children want to be heard. I'm raising future adults and they're growing up so fast. Tea time helps us to slow down and just enjoy being in each other's presence. Relaxing. It's also a great way to introduce or reinforce manners and etiquette. I think we can all agree that society as a whole is lacking in this area.
Light some candles. Pull out your pretty tea set that is only for special occasions, make some cookies or buy some snacks. Food is a quick way to my children's hearts, much like my husband.
My favorite little tea set is this one from amazon. It has a little saucer and a little spoon. It's just the right size for tea time. It's not too big or too small. Goldilocks would approve. Our favorite tea right now is Earl Grey. We're not too picky on brand, but that's what we had today. We experiment with many teas and enjoy trying new flavors.
