A Simple Christmas // Minimalist Shopping Guide for Kids

This time of year always seems to be a stressful time of year for a lot of people. As the season approaches, Daren and I have been preparing ourselves and our children for a simple Christmas.

We want to help our kids to see the value of experiences over having lots of things.

That's a huge reason why we've moved closer to minimalism over the past 5 years. It's cleansing, cathartic even, to do away with things that you don't need, want or use.

And then Christmas happens. In the past we have felt overrun with excess things. To compound matters, all three kids' birthdays are just after the holidays. We already don't do traditional birthday parties, but we have needed to make some changes to our usual Christmas toy invasion.

Daren and I have decided to buy quality over quantity is key for a simple Christmas. We aim to keep the season about giving and loving others.

I love the 4 gift rule, but want to buy a few more gifts than that. If you're not familiar with the 4 Gift Rule : Something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read. Four gifts is plenty. It's not the kids that have a problem with this.

It's my husband and I.

We LOVE spoiling our kids with gifts. Actually, we love giving gifts to everyone! The issue comes with budget and wanting to simplify. So we are doing around 7 gifts + a stocking. My eldest asked if she could forego a gift for herself to give to a child without toys.

Our other two kids overheard and want to do it, too. Well, we are good with that! I do want to share some gift ideas if you're like us and want to simplify your Christmas in the Gift Department.

I've also notice the less television our children watch, the less they desire piles of toys. The commercials are relentless and can be somewhat toxic to their growing minds. Just a little food for thought. Less tv works for our family.

Games :
1. Wildcraft Board Game
2. Mancala
3. Scatterball [when I was a kid, this was called Scram-Ball & it was hours of fun!]
